Which document types close BREEAM deviations

Last Updated: October 1, 2026

Below is an overview of the document types that can close deviations on BREEAM documentation in Cobuilder Collaborate. Which document types apply depends on the BREEAM manual the project is set up with.

BREEAM NOR 6.0/6.1.1

Mat 02 Life cycle impacts: Absence of environmental toxins

In the following document types, the content of substances that are harmful to health and the environment is pre-assessed – they automatically close documentation requirements:

The following document types give an overview of substance content – they don’t close documentation requirements automatically and must be evaluated first:

  • EPD – Environmental Product Declaration
  • EU Declaration of Conformity
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
  • ECOproduct method 5.2

Hea 02 Indoor air quality: Emissions from building products

The emission and content requirements for construction products are functional requirements and can be documented in several ways. The following document types close documentation requirements automatically:

The following document types are approved, or can be accepted if they contain information about indoor air emissions according to the Hea 02 criteria – but they don’t close documentation requirements automatically and must be evaluated first:

  • EPD – Environmental Product Declaration
  • Danish Indoor Climate Labelling
  • EU Ecolabel
  • Blue Angel
  • EMICODE EC1
  • EMICODE EC1 PLUS
  • ECOproduct
  • National technical approval
  • GUT label for textile floorings
  • Svanen
  • M1 – Emission Classification of Building Materials
  • SINTEF Environmental Certificate
  • EMICODE EC2

BREEAM NOR 2016

Absence of environmental toxins on Checklist A20 can be documented with:

  • EPD – Environmental Product Declaration
  • EU Ecolabel
  • BASTA
  • ECOproduct – the requirement is met if the product has a green or white symbol in the environmental area «Content of substances that are hazardous to health and the environment»
  • BREEAM self-declaration A20 2016
  • National technical approval
  • BREEAM 6.0/6.1.1 Mat 02 Self-declaration
  • Svanen
  • SINTEF Environmental Certificate
  • Byggvarubedömningen
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

For product types covered by Hea 02, the following document types apply:

  • EPD – Environmental Product Declaration – the requirement is met if the EPD includes information on indoor air emissions that complies with the levels set in BREEAM-NOR Hea 02
  • EMICODE EC1
  • BREEAM 6.0/6.1.1 Hea 02 Self-declaration exemplary level
  • BREEAM self-declaration HEA2
  • EMICODE EC1 PLUS
  • BREEAM 6.0/6.1.1 Hea 02 Self-declaration
  • ECOproduct – the requirement is met if the product has a green symbol in the environmental area «Emissions to the indoor environment»
  • National technical approval
  • GUT label for textile floorings
  • Svanen
  • M1 – Emission Classification of Building Materials
  • SINTEF Environmental Certificate

BREEAM NOR 2012

Absence of environmental toxins on Checklist A20 can be documented with:

  • EPD – Environmental Product Declaration
  • EU Ecolabel
  • BREEAM self-declaration A20
  • National technical approval
  • Svanen
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

For product types covered by HEA 9, the following document types apply:

  • EMICODE EC1
  • EMICODE EC1 PLUS
  • BREEAM self-declaration Hea 9
  • M1 – Emission Classification of Building Materials

Note: New projects can no longer be registered under BREEAM-NOR v6.0. For projects that are already registered, the BREEAM-NOR v6.0 manual is still valid as the basis for certification. Because there are no significant changes to the product requirements between v6.0 and v6.1.1, Cobuilder Collaborate has one shared filter covering both manuals, as well as shared self-declaration templates.

✓ You now know which document types close BREEAM deviations automatically, and which must be evaluated first, for the BREEAM manual set up on your project.
