My risk management – How to create a risk management

Last Updated: October 12, 2026

You can close chemical deviations by creating a risk management for the chemical. A product that breaches one of the project’s chemical requirements but has a completed risk management is excluded from the deviation count on the dashboard and from the Deviations menu.

Find the chemicals that need a risk management

1

Open the project. On the dashboard, the My risk management tab in the Chemicals widget shows how many chemicals have deviations, how many have a completed risk management, and how many still need one.

2

Click Risk management in the menu on the left. The menu expands so you can choose between My risk management (chemicals you have added to the project) and Sub-contractors risk management (chemicals added by your sub-contractors).

3

Click My risk management. The Chemical requirement status column shows whether each chemical meets the project’s requirements or has a deviation. Click the arrow next to the column name to sort the list so the deviations are listed together.

Start a risk management

Note: You can’t save along the way and continue later. If you close the window before you click Finish on the last step, everything you have filled in is lost.

4

Click the three dots to the right of the chemical and select Create Risk Management. From the same menu you can also select Browse SDS revisions to see other versions of the safety data sheet.

5

A new window opens with an 8-step process. The first step, Load data from company template, is optional. Click Continue without template to fill in everything from scratch, or click Select next to a template in the list to load its data. Read more in How to create a risk management template.

Risk assessment, elimination and substitution

6

Select the Frequency of use and Exposure level for the chemical. Click the info icon next to Exposure level to see examples of what each level means. The system then calculates the risk assessment value. On the right, Risk level statuses shows the limits used to classify the risk as Low, Medium or High. Click Next step.

7

The next step asks whether the chemical can be eliminated. Click Eliminate if you can use a technical process instead of the chemical, write a comment (required) and click Finish – the risk management is then complete. To go on with the process instead, click Continue to substitution, optionally add a comment, and click Next step.

8

In Chemical substitution, look for a less hazardous chemical to replace it with – either from a company substitution group (Load chemicals from company substitution groups) or by searching in Cobuilder Supply (Search in Cobuilder Supply). Read more in How to create a chemical substitution group.

9

Tick the alternative product in the results and click Compare. The system shows the risk values for both chemicals side by side, with the original’s Frequency of use and Exposure level preselected – adjust them for the new product if needed. Select No substitution or Make substitution, write a comment explaining why (required), and click Next step. For a full walkthrough of this step, see How to substitute a chemical using the substitution group.

Measures and personal protective equipment

10

If the chemical was neither eliminated nor substituted, the process continues with Technical measures and then Organizational measures. Both steps are optional: select measures from the dropdown, add a comment if you want, and click Next step. Comments are not translated automatically.

11

In Select personal protective equipment, choose the equipment that is used. When you select one item, equipment that can’t be combined with it is marked Not applicable due to current selection. The more relevant equipment you select, the lower the health risk (Health risk level with protective equipment) – but only select equipment that is actually used when working with the chemical. Note the warnings on this page: you should consider PPE even if the chemical’s labelling shows no health hazard, and by selecting PPE you confirm that the conditions for its proper use are met. Write a Conclusion (required) and click Next step.

Final conclusion and follow-up

12

The last step, General risk level conclusion, shows a suggested General risk management status level, which you can change if needed. Add a comment if anything is missing to meet the authorities’ requirements for risk evaluation, and write a Final comment (required). The page also lists points a)–k) from FOR-2011-06-1357 (the Norwegian regulation on the performance of work), which the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority considers particularly important for the risk assessment. Click Finish at the top right.

13

If you have the Company Admin role, click Save as new template at the top of the completed risk management to reuse it for other chemicals.

Comply: Upgrade to Ensure to save a risk management as a template.

At the bottom of the completed risk management, Activity history shows the date and which user made changes to the risk management.

14

When you open Chemical list from the menu on the left, chemicals with a completed risk management are marked with a shield icon next to their status.

✓ You have now completed a risk management for the chemical. If it had a deviation from the project’s chemical requirements, it is now excluded from the deviation count on the dashboard and from the Deviations menu.
